About Terry Mac Photography

Inspiration and Beginnings

My name is Terry.  My journey into photography began a decade ago during a memorable Christmas with my family. That week, we watched the movie The Big Year (2011), featuring Steve Martin.  Being inspired, my oldest son and I decided to embark on our own “big year” of birding competition.  This new pursuit led us to invest in quality cameras capable of capturing images of small, swift birds from afar.  The learning curve was steep, but I was fortunate to receive seasoned advice from experienced photographers.  Over the years, our friendly competition has grown to include more participants and continues to this day.

Travel and Discovery

Birding competitions often require traveling, as the variety of species in one’s hometown is limited. These journeys introduced me to breathtaking landscapes in distant regions.  While reviewing the photos, I realized my collection included not only birds but also striking landscapes.  Annual fly fishing trips to Wyoming, Montana, North Carolina, and northern Michigan further enriched my portfolio.  In fact, I often found myself spending more time photographing than fishing.  Encounters with bears, antelope, elk, bison, moose, and wolves added to the excitement.  Upgrading my cameras and lenses along the way, I found myself with thousands of images worth sharing.

A New Chapter

Much of my working life was spent behind a desk, books, and computers, billing clients by the hour. While some might find this routine dull, it provided the means for me to pursue my passion for nature and photography.  Sharing these captured moments brings me immense joy, especially when someone tells me, “That picture hanging in my living room is fantastic,” or “I admire it every time I see it,” or “My houseguests always ask about the print.”

The Power of Photography

Photography is a way to transport viewers into the environment, inviting them to experience the scene with the subject. My aim is simple: the image should evoke a positive feeling.  Achieving the perfect print requires time, travel, and a great deal of walking, all in the pursuit of creating artwork that can be truly appreciated on your wall.

Invitation

I invite you to explore my collection.  Perhaps you will discover a print that brings you joy.  The search for that next perfect image never ends.  Eyes up!
